How Hammer Mills Work
All general purpose hammer rock crusher utilize three primary methods of reduction: impact, shear and friction. As material enters the mill from the vertical chute, it comes into contact with the leading edge of the hammers, each of which is firmly fixed to the rotating rotor. The hammer rock crusher is fixed to the rotor body and are allowed to swing and tilt back a certain amount. Centrifugal force keeps the hammers extended and the inertial force released on the material crushes the rock on impact. The particles bounce off the impact plate or crushing block and back into the hammer ring. Instantly, the material is carried into the grate or cage assembly where shear reduces the larger particles and carries them across the grate surface, grinding the particles into a controlled gradation. Once the particles are reduced to the proper size, openings in the grate and cage assembly allow the particles to escape from the mill.

In many limestone formations, coal seams or seam clouds contain soft, hazardous materials such as flint, shale or mudstone. This material can adversely affect the value of the finished product. Hammer rock crusher can be set up to pulverize the soft rock and shear the edges of the hard rock in a single pass through the mill.
